Biodegradable and recyclable get used interchangeably in marketing copy, but they describe completely different end of life pathways. Confusing them can lead to well intentioned procurement decisions that actually increase your environmental footprint.

What Biodegradable Really Means
Biodegradable packaging breaks down through the action of naturally occurring microorganisms (bacteria, fungi) into water, CO2 or methane, and biomass. The critical qualifiers most brands omit are under what conditions and how quickly.
True industrial compostable packaging (certified to IS ISO 17088 in India or EN 13432 in Europe) breaks down within 180 days at 55 to 65 degrees Celsius in a controlled composting facility. Home compostable certification (TUV OK Compost HOME) means the same result in a backyard bin at ambient temperature within a year.
Any material simply labelled "biodegradable" with no time frame or condition is unregulated marketing. Some conventional plastics claim biodegradability but only fragment into microplastics under UV exposure, which is worse than staying intact.
What Recyclable Really Means
Recyclable packaging can be physically processed into a new material of similar or lower grade. PET bottles become rPET fibre for polyester clothing or new food grade bottles. Aluminium cans become new aluminium cans, indefinitely.
Recyclability depends on three factors: (1) the material itself is recyclable, (2) the local infrastructure exists to collect and process it, (3) end markets exist for the recycled output. India has all three for PET bottles and aluminium. HDPE closures and paper labels also recycle well.
Where They Diverge in Practice
A biodegradable bottle in a landfill (without oxygen) breaks down slowly and releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas. That same bottle in an industrial composter becomes soil amendment in six months. Location matters more than the material.
A recyclable PET bottle that ends up in a landfill sits there for centuries with a very small environmental impact per bottle. That same bottle picked up by India's kabadiwala network and processed through an MRF becomes rPET flake within weeks.
