Recycled PET (rPET) has become the fastest way for brands to reduce packaging emissions without changing product performance. India's collection and processing infrastructure is not perfect, but it has improved dramatically in the last five years. This is the state of play in 2025.
The Environmental Case
Producing PET resin from post consumer bottles instead of virgin fossil feedstock cuts energy use by roughly 79 percent and greenhouse gas emissions by 67 percent, according to the WRAP UK LCA methodology adapted for Indian energy grids. Every tonne of rPET keeps roughly 5,000 500 ml bottles out of landfill and reduces virgin plastic demand by the same tonnage.
India's Collection Network
India recycles about 90 percent of its PET bottles, one of the highest rates globally. Credit for that number goes almost entirely to the informal kabadiwala network. Roughly 1.7 million ragpickers collect, sort, and channel plastic waste to aggregators, who sell to registered recyclers.
The system is efficient but historically unhygienic and low margin for the workers at the bottom. Formalisation under the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) rules that came into force in 2022 is slowly changing that. Producers now pay a per tonne EPR fee that funds proper Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) and better wages for collection workers.
Food Grade rPET Capacity
Not all rPET is food safe. Food contact rPET requires super clean processing that removes any surface contamination and heavy metals. India had zero food grade rPET plants in 2018. As of 2025 there are eight, with combined capacity of about 240,000 tonnes per year.
The FSSAI approved food grade rPET for direct food contact in 2022, aligning India with EU and US regulation. Brands using food grade rPET can now claim recycled content on packaging without qualification.
Practical Recommendations for Buyers
- Ask your packaging supplier for their food grade rPET percentage and the certification body that verified it.
- Verify EPR compliance. Every producer selling PET bottled water in India must have a registered EPR plan under CPCB oversight.
- Look for the "rPET" tag on the base of the bottle. Any bottle without the tag is likely virgin.
